Some time ago, we (at work) were building a handful of new machines and
at the same time rebuilding our local mail server. Our 'theme' for
machine names for this short period of time were muppet band members.
We had machines with names of "clifford", "rizzo", "zoot", and "gonzo".
The latter ended up being the rebuilt mail server, largely by chance.
Later we integrated mail servers from two campuses (two subdomains), and
we discoverd a minor issue with the vacation program (autoresponder) --
it would send autoresponder e-mails out with "From" of
"user@gonzo.local.domain" (would not masquarade the machine name out).
Our in-house VP saw this and became rather agitated. He sent me a terse
note stating that this is very unprofessional and certainly not
something we should be advertising to the world. I worked with another
Solaris admin to see if we could clean that up, but it never happened
(low priority, other bigger projects in queue).
Eventually the local VP left left the company and we replaced "gonzo"
with another machine, so the problem worked itself out in the end.
I was always curious why our VP made a big stink about it, though. I
thought it was only mildly unprofessional but very benign (it's a muppet!).
The other day, while driving in to work and listening to the radio, the
DJs managed to get a phone interview with a porn producer in Southern
California. They were going over his credentials and one of the things
he bragged about was that he consistently won awards for "Gonzo" style
of porn.
It turns out, "Gonzo" is the nickname given to porn movies that are
unscripted (simply roll camera and edit for production).
Funny.
